Old DNA Reveals New Findings For Koala Disease

Image
Untitled Document The koala retrovirus (KoRV) is well documented to have troubled the koalas' community for long time. Recently researchers Alex Greenwood and Alfred Roca commissioned a study of their DNA using skin samples from koalas kept in USA and European museums. And the analysis revealed that this retrovirus problem may have persisted for far longer period that we have imagined. Greenwood is based in Berlin's Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (LZW) and Roca is an assistant professor in animal sciences at the University of Illinois.

Organic Concoctions On Ice May Reveal How Life Started On Earth

Image
Untitled Document Icy organics may not be your idea of coffee to die for, but over in Pasadena, California, NASA's researchers are busy making icy organic concoctions, or carbon-bearing molecules. These molecules are then zapped with lasers. The goal is noble: to find out how life began on our planet.

Pacific Ecosystem To Experience Major Shift By 2100

Image
Untitled Document Imagine waking up one day to realize that your favorite grocery store had shifted out a few miles away again? If this pattern persists, it won't take long for you to embark long trip just to feed your family. It does not make sense in our world yet but it could possibly be a not-so-distant reality for marine animals as climate change continues its threat.

Quasars Light Can Possibly Map Universe's Structure And Spread

Image
Untitled Document Space scientists must have envied Columbus since he was able to set sail and go to places where no one else has been. But, as scientists at Case Western Reserve University found out, they don't have to travel far to figure out the structure and spread of the universe. Instead of sail, they depend on quasars.

Vesta Received Hydrated Material Package As Special Delivery

Image
Untitled Document It seems like ages ago when scientists from different camps just kept arguing on where water originates from among the many terrestrial planets. Recently, NASA also gets into the argument now that its Dawn mission to Vesta has suggested moisture was made available through degenerations of small particles at a time when the Solar System was filled with dust.

Energy Bursts From Star-Forming Galaxies In Early Universe

Image
Untitled Document The early formation of galaxies was characterized by quick succession of new stars. During those early days of universe, enormous energy was released in the form of fireworks, which directly caused a massive central black hole in our galaxies.

Digital Extinction Haunts Several European Languages

Image
Untitled Document It is estimated that over 20 European languages could be wiped off the digital space for a lack of technological support. This observation is made by Europe's leading language technology experts. Scientists from The University of Manchester also participated in the study.

Cosmic Seagull Has Vivid Colors

Image
Untitled Document The La Silla Observatory from the European Southern Observatory has unveiled yet another breathtaking cosmic image. Essentially made up of gas, what was previously known as Sharpless 2-292 is now more popularly referred to as the Seagull Nebula, its nickname rather than the scientific name. It resembles the head of a seagull right in the midst of it is a very hot young star, whereby its high energy radiation contributes to that bright glow. The highly detailed image was made possible with the Wide Field Imager software with the help of the MPG/ESO 2.2-m diameter telescope.

Remnants of 2012's Largest Earthquake

Image
Untitled Document On April 11, a '8.6 magnitude' earthquake shocked Sumatra, off East Indian Ocean. Thankfully, the casualty was not major even at that magnitude. However, analysis from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and University of California, Berkeley confirmed that it did trigger quakes around the world in the week immediately followed that earthquake.

8.7 MMS Earthquake Added To Breaking Of Earth Crust

Image
Untitled Document While the breaking up of the Indo-Australian plate of Earth's crust has been long anticipated, seismologists were still left in awe when at least 4 faults broke in an earthquake measuring a magnitude of 8.7. That great Indian Ocean quake on April 2012 may make itself the largest ever recorded.

Computers Understand Art Same As Humans Do

Image
Untitled Document Art appreciation is a tricky subject. But most would agree that this is an activity exclusive to mankind. Is that right? It is almost fashionable for society to push the envelope in modern age. So it is not surprising when computer scientists ultimately come together and design experiment that attempts to convince us the alternative view'. But this experiment is interesting nevertheless as the programmers have put together some algorithm to demonstrate computers do "understand" art, in a way not dissimilar to how arts buyers and valuators process their thinking in evaluating a piece of art.

Vampire Squids Are Not Vampish About Meals

Image
Untitled Document Close to a century ago, the public was first treated to glimpses on a vampire squid. Today this mysterious deep sea creature continues to intrigue people (judged by the number of scientific papers being published since the first sighting) but not much has been said about its daily diet.

3D Images of 300 Million Years Old Insects

Image
Untitled Document Researchers at University of Manchester recently dropped a bombshell when they unveiled 300-million-year-old insects captured in 3-D images.

Anti-Slavery Rebellion Present In Ants

Image
Untitled Document It is common knowledge that worker ants are used for a simple yet enormous task: to exterminate the offspring of their parasites. It is a thankless job and it smacks of slavery in insect world but nevertheless necessary to ensure survival of the ant specie.

Gut Bacteria Can Aid Type 2 Diabetes

Image
Untitled Document Two pieces of bad news to get this article going: increasing number of people are affected by type 2 diabetes the world over, and probably a lot more people are affected by it but not realizing it. But modern medicinal research has now made it possible to detect this disease by examining our gut bacteria. The prognosis is derived based on pathogens in the intestines.

Independent Evolution of Brain Parts Possible

Image
Untitled Document In a collaborative work between The University of Manchester and the USA, biologists feel they have good reasons to believe that parts of the brain can evolve independently. It lays a framework which hopefully will trigger more significant discovery about our brain.

Rhythmic Activities of Neurons Necessary For Learning

Image
Untitled Document The hippocampus is that integral part of brain structure that facilitates learning. Scientists of Munich based Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry have discovered that through its unique control mechanism, inputs and outputs neuronal electrical signals could be processed (filtered or allowed) accordingly for the purpose of regulating the processes of memory and learning.

Stunted Planet Suggested By Troughs of Asteroid

Image
Untitled Document Since the July 2011 sighting of the extensive troughs that spans the entire breadth of asteroid Vesta, scientists have always been intrigued by through system's enormous size, which is not normal, to say the least. Now, new analysis has suggested that these troughs could have been resulted from another asteroid, when it crash-landed onto South Pole of Vesta. The finding reinforces the belief that Vesta is likely a layered asteroid, a character more closely associated with larger entities, like large moons and planets.

God Particle: Theory And Findings

Image
Untitled Document Recently Large Hadron Collider (LHC) claimed that they might have discovered God particle, the long-sought Higgs boson. Notice here the key word is 'may', that underlines the ambiguity about this elusive sub-atomic particle. While the scientific world has come to some sort of conclusion regarding the peculiar characteristics of God particle, there has been no physical evidence to suggest that it exists.

Escher’s Waterfall Made In Real Life

Image
Untitled Document McWolles has created the famous amazing and impossible waterfall by M.C. Escher. He made use of clever and perspective woodworking to achieve this impossible task.
